Hygge (pronounced ‘hue-gah’) is a Danish concept focused around comfort, wellness, and connection. First appearing in the Norwegian language and popular in Scandinavia, the term is a descriptor of general well-being, it’s been co-opted by the design community to symbolize a movement towards warmer tones, natural, soft textures, and designs that empower people to come together as well as allow people to find their own personal, comfortable space.

“Hygge is the sensation of familiarity, of being seen and recognized, and feeling at home.”

Although the term has been utilized since the 19th century, it was only recently grasped by designers to portray a work environment or aesthetic. Ironically, this new use may show up to run counter to the original intention o the concept. It is implied a sense of connection and how individuals use space to both escape and come together that has attracted iWPS Designers to some of the sentiments of hygge.

Obviously, a hygge approach isn’t suitable for all environment and brands. But this style of living and working is demonstrative of a feeling that’s getting to be more common as our clients seek to describe some of the changes they’d like to see take place in their culture and Workplace.

Hygge is all about enjoying the environment around you and transforming personal spaces into little sanctuaries which let us sink into them at any moment.

Bringing photos, pot plants, a favorite mug from home or fun stationeries is a great way to add personality to your work-space. Most of the workplaces are designed in a very practical and streamlined way, but to get some hygge it helps to add personality.

Bring the outdoors in with you

Hygge doesn’t just apply to cozy indoor dwellings. having a plant to look after can help to recreate all of those happy vibes we get from being outdoors, adding that they can have a surprisingly powerful effect on your mood at work. gathering a couple of plants, so you have a beautiful green corner to rest your eyes on.

Discover something new

Whether it’s a small gallery or a hidden green space, get to know the place you work in and find out what it has to offer.
